The week has been no less uneventful for publishing’s sister medium: newspapers. Also on Tuesday, after a century of publishing a weekday paper, The Christian Science Monitor announced that it will cease daily publication, produce a weekly print version, and migrate most content to its website. Worlds Best Commute?

October 29, 2008 by Bill Sobel · Leave a Comment

Ah the life of a commuter. When I have to be in NYC 2-3 days a week I usually take the 6:05 train from Bethpage which gets me into Penn Station a little before 7am. While I don’t mind it (most days), I can’t imagine doing it 5 days a week. However according to Forbes there are cities that are more pleasant than others…and unfortunately NYC did not make the top 10. Read more

Timing is everything. Today marks the 1st anniversary of the official launch of Hulu. Hulu,  founded in March 2007 by NBC Universal and News Corp as a destination to help people find and enjoy the world’s premium video content when, where and how they want it.

Kliavkoff launched the site before hiring Jason Kilar as his replacement and secured $100 million in funding from private equity group Providence Equity Partners. Read more

October 28, 2008 by Bill Sobel · Leave a Comment

Thanks to the folks at TrylonSMR, ScribeMedia.org, an online media production company with an editorial section that covers events across a broad range of subject areas, featured an audio podcast on the comedy breakfast featuring Sarah Bernard, President of 236.com from our “Comedy & Media  Breakfast” last week at Samsung.

“Dying is easy, comedy is hard.” Sir Donald Wolfit, British actor and director, was reputed to have said these words on his deathbed. Who knows if dying is easy? But in a digital age comedy is getting easier, what with the countless outlets online for existing comedians to build an audience and aspiring comedians to find one. Read more

Looking for a deal on software: OpenOffice 3.0 is excellent and FREE!

October 27, 2008 by Bill Sobel · Leave a Comment

Being a Long Islander I have been reading Newsday for a long time…and over the past few years Newsday, along with other newspapers, have been writing alot about the internet and related technologies. Lou Doliner of Newsday is one of the pioneers and in my estimation one of the best. His knowledge of the subject as well as his tips, tricks and opinions are always worth reading. Take for example yesterday’s review of OpenOffice 3.0 a free alternative to Microsoft Office.

Lou Dolinar: OpenOffice is a worthy alternative

The final version of OpenOffice.org 3, the open source competitor to Microsoft Office, came out two weeks ago and looks better than ever.

I’ve been using its predecessors for years, and, broadly speaking, OO3 is the most useful, widely compatible software ever. You can run it on anything: Macs, PCs, Linux, Unix workstations. And it doesn’t cost a penny. Read more
