In the midst of a recession, and a shrinking jobs market that has affected the communications industry as it has affected everyone else, Bill Sobel’s New York Media Information Exchange Group hosted a breakfast this morning called “I Lost My Career: Now What?, with Jason Alba, CEO of JibberJobber.com. He’s the author of “I’m on LinkedIn – Now What?”

Some highlights of his presentation and of the meeting:

Alba talks about his comprehensive social strategy – he uses a variety of tools, including social sites, blogs, newsletter and articles. For the most part, today’s presentation will center on LinkedIn.

He tells jobseekers that they must have a newsletter that goes out to their circle of friends. Premise is, people want to help me in my job search. Should say: here’s where I’ve interviewed, here are the companies I’ve contacted, here are the job titles I’ve interviewed for. Here are the three companies that I would like to get into – do you know anybody there.

Professional blogs are great because they can tell a reader who you are. You can do so without space constraints inherent in resumes.

Recommends article writing, if only for SEO. Favorite place to post is newsletter that people in your industry read regularly.

Write a book- great marketing tool. Write a book and give it away to people in your industry – some think of them as an expensive bsiness card.Or simply an ebook – just a document published as a PDF.

Discusses complementary social strategy – using relationships with each facet of social strategy to build reolationships on every other facet of social strategy.

Suggests we replace the term “job security” – there is none – with “income security,” which is what we really care about.
