Google launches frontal attack on Microsoft

Excellent article from the “Financial Times” today regarding the new Google “Chrome” operating system set to launch in 2010

If it was anyone but Google, the announcement that a new Linux-based operating system was being developed for PCs would have been greeted with a collective online yawn yesterday.

Instead, a post on the official Google blog – “Introducing the Google Chrome OS” – produced apoplexy in the technology blogosphere.

“Google’s setting the stage for a major battle with Microsoft,” said Mashable, a technology blog.

“This is Google dropping the mother of bombs on its chief rival, Microsoft,” exclaimed the influential Techcrunch blog, already declaring Google the victor.

“Don’t worry about those desktop [applications] you think you need. Office? Meh,” it said dismissively, referring to Microsoft’s software, before describing the array of web-based weaponry Google was lining up against Microsoft.
