For those of you unfamiliar, Elliott Forrest is a Peabody Award winning broadcaster and producer. He has been heard regularly on WQXR since 2002. He is the national radio host of the syndicated concerts from The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and creates regular podcasts for The New York Philharmonic. He spoke recently with LoHud.com (New York’s Lower Hudson Valley) about the changes at WQXR.
The classical music station WQXR has changed ownership, from the New York Times Company to WNYC Radio, and its frequency has been moved to 105.9 FM from 96.3.
We asked Elliott Forrest, a Nyack resident and award-winning broadcaster, about the changes and his life in the village.
Q: What does the recent change at WQXR mean to your listeners?
A: First of all, classical music remains on the NYC airwaves, moving to 105.9 FM and WQXR.org. That is huge. For a time, there was a real possibility that the greatest city in the world would be without a classical station. But this music has been saved. You’ll also hear WQXR becoming even more rooted in the cultural scene of NYC.
Q: What does the recent change mean to you?
A: It means I will continue to share the music I’m passionate about and to be an advocate for arts and culture. I have been given a unique opportunity, to move from hosting weekdays to taking on a wide variety of duties, including on-air hosting on WQXR during weekend mornings, hosting live concert broadcasts, conducting interviews and occasionally having a presence on WNYC. I am thrilled to see what lies ahead. I am a huge fan of public radio, and after a career in commercial radio and television, I’m excited to be employed full-time by a listener-supported station.
