Anyway, one of the newest members of the mishpacah (extended family in Yiddish) is Ellis Henican…Newsday Columnist, Fox News Analyist, radio show host (WOR, Fox Radio Network to name a few) and one of our favorite NY:MIEG moderators.

Henican’s column in today’s Newsday is one of the best I’ve read about this whole Caroline Kennedy For Senator business.

How they elected a Kennedy

Caroline Kennedy isn’t the senator. Not yet. But even now, it isn’t a minute too soon to look at the facts as we know them and tease out the backroom politics. I may be getting ahead of myself here. But believe me, there’s an awfully juicy backstory…

Start with this undeniable political fact: In endorsing Barack Obama during the Democratic primaries, Ted Kennedy did him a major favor. No endorsement was more helpful in defeating Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Question of the Day: List-mania

By Brian Reich

The end of the year is rapidly approaching, which means the media world has once again become obsessed with lists. There are top ten lists popping up in newspapers, magazines, and on radio and TV for everything: crises and controversies, news stories, celebrity train-wrecks, movies, songs, books, and tv shows, iPhone applications, games (both video games and sports games), scientific breakthroughs, even blunders. Just in time for the holidays you’ll find books featuring the top magazine stories of the year, best fiction or sports writing. One columnist wrote up his top top ten lists for the year. Time Magazine published a whole issue devoted to lists.

I could go on, but you get the idea.

Do you read these lists? What do you do with them? For some reason, I save these lists. I just cleaned out a big pile of paper in my office and found lists dating back to 2005 - everything from “Next Year’s Big Ideas” (most of which, on further review, ended up not being so big after all) to “Big Names From the Last Year” (most I remember, but haven’t heard about since). Needless to say, keeping those lists didn’t do much beyond take up space. Now I’m wondering whether reading these lists is even worth it.

Question of the day: Do these lists matter? Our media spends a lot of time culling and publishing/airing these lists - but for what? If you say yes, what lists matter most, and why? If your answer is “they don’t matter - what a waste of space”, then tell me what the media should spend the end of the year writing about and focusing on.

Recently, Mayor Bloomberg - the same guy who wavered on a presidential run for about three years - told David Paterson to hurry up and make a decision about filling Hillary Clinton’s Senate seat already. Then yesterday, Sheldon Silver, the most intractable personality in the world, indicated that he would support Caroline Kennedy’s bid for the spot, supposedly because he thinks she’ll get it anyway, but perhaps because he simply wants to speed things along. Paterson, meanwhile, is dismissing suggestions that if he can’t make a real decision, maybe he should just appoint a caretaker senator to run out the clock on the seat (that is, until the 2010 special election). Someone like Bill Clinton, or Mario Cuomo, because we know only three families in this state of 20 million people are truly eligible.

But even as Paterson refuted that idea and asked for patience yesterday, he showed signs that the speculation was getting to him. For one, he joked that his New Year’s resolution was “to try not to talk about the Senate,” which, like all New Year’s resolutions, didn’t last for more than a couple of hours. He also displayed some nervous humor when welcoming a little girl, Caroline Spore of Delmar, into the Executive Mansion during an open house for New York’s hoi polloi. “Caroline is here, everybody!” he shouted. “She’s 7. And she’s ready to go to the Senate.”

She has been working incredibly hard these past few months on a variety of interesting projects and it’s starting to pay off in a very big way!

Andrea, as many of you know, is a good friend, a past (and future) speaker at NY:MIEG events, and is a truly special person. She has written and lectured extensively on relationships and living a fulfilling life, and is writing a new advice book for Rodale which will be released later this year. Andrea also writes a regular dating column for Yahoo and is currently writing and hosting ON DATING, a dating advice show produced by NBC Digital Studios for ON Networks.

She recently partnered with Estee Lauder and SOHO Bloomingdales and is producing a special event called “Makeup, Martinis & Men” for single women 25-40. I encourage my single female friends to attend this wonderful evening Feb 3!
