Estee Lauder and Andrea Syrtash Presents “Makeup, Martinis & Men”
January 3, 2009 by Bill Sobel · Leave a Comment
I am so proud of my friend Andrea Syrtash. She has been working incredibly hard these past few months on a variety of interesting projects and it’s starting to pay off in a very big way!
Andrea, as many of you know, is a good friend, a past (and future) speaker at NY:MIEG events, and is a truly special person. She has written and lectured extensively on relationships and living a fulfilling life, and is writing a new advice book for Rodale which will be released later this year. Andrea also writes a regular dating column for Yahoo and is currently writing and hosting ON DATING, a dating advice show produced by NBC Digital Studios for ON Networks.
She recently partnered with Estee Lauder and SOHO Bloomingdales and is producing a special event called “Makeup, Martinis & Men” for single women 25-40. I encourage my single female friends to attend this wonderful evening Feb 3!

The Marvin Kitman Show
December 31, 2008 by Bill Sobel · Leave a Comment
If you are a Long Islander, Newsday reader and around my age (early 50’s) the name Marvin Kitman is probably familiar.
Marvin Kitman was the media critic at Newsday. His column, “The Marvin Kitman Show,” began on Dec. 7, 1969. On April 1, 2005, he stepped down from his position of power. As he explained, “Newsday gave me a tryout, and after 35 years we decided it wasn’t working out.” He is the author of nine books. His newest book is “The Man Who Would Not Shut Up: The Rise of Bill O’Reilly,” published by St. Martin’s Press. Read more

A Kids Eye View of the Obama Inauguration on January 20th
December 29, 2008 by Bill Sobel · 1 Comment
Hats off to the folks at Nickelodeon for their interest in kids and the presidential campaign.
NEW YORK - Nickelodeon TV, the children’s network, is getting ready to cover its first presidential inauguration.
Young reporters Lily Collins, rocker Phil Collins’s daughter, and J.J. (the network would not release his last name) will be in Washington on Jan. 20 to show Barack Obama’s inauguration from a pint-size perspective.
Throughout the presidential campaign, Nickelodeon found that interest among its young viewers matched that of the adults. Nick’s own online “election” had 2.2 million children voting, with kids supporting Obama over John McCain (51 percent to 49 percent) in a closer margin than the real election. Read more
What is a Mitzvah Market?
December 29, 2008 by Bill Sobel · Leave a Comment
As many of you know who follow this blog, I started my career back in 1979 as a page at NBC here in New York. In addition to being a great way to “break in” to the business, you also have a chance to meet up with some interesting people…not only the celebrities, but fellow pages who move onto interesting careers, and Sheri Lapidus is a good example.
While Sheri and I were not on the Page staff at the same time, we all stay in touch via a YahooGroup that was set up a few years ago.
After her stint as a Page, Sheri spent 20 years in Public Relations including various publicity roles at NBC-TV, CBS-TV, In Style magazine, Kaplow Communications and most recently as Executive Director of Public Relations for ELLE magazine.
A Jericho resident, she is currently planning her daughter’s Bat Mitzvah scheduled for 2010…which is where the Mitzvah Market story begins. Read more

I had the pleasure of meeting Jordan a few months ago and was impressed…not only with the business but the passion and intelligence of the entire team at SaberSeven.
There’s No Place Like the Web for Dorthy.com Founder Jordan English Gross
by Gillian Reagan/The New York Observer
Jordan English Gross can usually tell within five minutes of meeting someone whether they’ve given up on their childhood dreams. “It usually just takes a short conversation,” Mr. Gross said, sitting in a small conference room in the office of his new Web project, Dorthy.com, whose purpose is to enable people to “do their dreams,” according to its slogan. “It’s something we really look for in the people who work here,” he said, meaning the retention of youthful hopes. We Support the Robin Hood Foundation
December 23, 2008 by Bill Sobel · 1 Comment
For our annual holiday gift Sobel Media has again made a donation to The Robin Hood Foundation in honor of our friend Robert W. Pittman. Bob is the chairman of the Robin Hood Foundation, the “founding father” of MTV, former CEO of AOL and currently managing partner of the Pilot Group.
“Bob, since the first NY:MIEG breakfast you did with Fred Seibert (December 2006) we have been pleased to make a donation in your name to Robin Hood and encourge all our friends and members to do the same. Thanks for all you do.”
Robin Hood targets poverty in New York City by finding and funding the best community-based groups and partnering with them to maximize results. Our board underwrites all administrative and fundraising costs so 100% of donations go directly to programs helping New Yorkers build better lives.
